I find a quiet place in the house, close my eyes and try a few minutes of meditation, letting my thoughts relax and wander. Later I might organize my desk or even go for a walk and make a list of everything that I’m grateful for in my life.
And oh, yes, I will most certainly write and work to get whatever creative thoughts that I have brewing in my brain down on paper.
We’re focusing on self-care this month on The Heart of the Matter. When work or home become crazy, when I need to step away from it all and practice a little self-care, I have my little tip and tricks and best practices. In this day and age, I think most of us do.
Some of my self-care tips work right away, others take time and work over the long haul. When I’ve followed through with most of the tricks up my sleeve, I have one more “Hail Mary Pass” that works the majority of the time: I’ll get out into nature. I’ll make a weekend trip to the mountains or woods, but my all-time favorite is the beach.
I have a fascination with water and the ocean. The sound of the waves crashing on the shore has a calming effect on me. The season doesn’t matter. It could be the hottest point in the summer or the coldest part of the winter, I don’t care.
The feel of the sand and water on my toes, the squawking of the seagulls, the ships passing in the distance, the smell of the cool air pull me out of whatever funk I’m in and remind me what matters most in life.
In the end, isn’t that what self-care should be about, helping us remember what’s important?
……
I write more about the power of the beach in my post today, A whale of a time, on my WordPress blog at Writing from the Heart with Brian. You can follow me on Instagram at @writingfromtheheartwithbrian.
All the best, Brian.

Nature is a huge one for me as well Brian. During all the tough decision making times pre-divorce for me I would often head to our Pacific coast for a break. Even a few days of calm helped and carried me through.

I don’t think I really covered it well, but I find that nature helps clarify what’s important and what matters better than anything else I’ve found. I don’t go in looking for answers, I’m just trying to get away or whatever, but I come away better for it.

You got me with this, Brian: …”sand and water on my toes, the squawking of the seagulls, the ships passing in the distance, the smell of the cool air”. I feel as if I’m there! Thank you! 😎

I concur! Nature is the ultimate self-care salve. Whether a week away or a 10-minute walk around the neighborhood, it really does help put things into perspective.

I don’t ever regret leaving the PNW for the Midwest, but I do miss the ocean. That was always a place I turned to when my soul needed soothing.

I hear you Mark. While it’s a little harder to get to the beach, I suspect you have access to some amazing lakes. Something about the water. Thanks for reading.

The beach is my special place, too. In a few more weeks, we’ll be there!

That’s great EA. We usually go in the late spring/early summer and then in the fall. Learn something new every trip. Hope you have a great time.

I’m sure we will! We’ve rented the same cottage for more than five years now. It’s only a five or six hour drive for our kids to join us from the Bay Area.

My wife is trying to schedule a trip right now to see our son in California. I’m finding out very quickly that a five or six hour drive there is nothing. Ha, ha. Anyway, have a blast. And yes, it is pretty cool when the grown-kids can join in on the fun.

It depends on traffic! Santa Barbara used to be a four hour drive for us from Palm Springs. Now it’s nine! We may break it up to two days.

The beach, specifically the ocean with the hypnotic waves, is my favorite too. In a pinch there are numerous beaches within easy access here in the Puget Sound area.

Love the sound more than anything. The constant motion. Thanks for reading.

There was a study, based on large datasets, that found that people are happier in more scenic locations, like near water: your feelings seem to be backed by science!

Here’s a small sample set. We have a grove of trees in our backyard. It’s definitely my happy place! Ha, ha.

Beautiful Brian. I played your video and listening to and watching the waves crashing, I found myself taking a deep breath and relaxing. I could almost smell the salt air sitting in my kitchen. Thanks for the opportunity to unwind. 🙂
