Episode 112: “Mr. Whisper” with Author Andrew Mayne

I don’t know if I can get away with this or not but let me try. Talking with our latest guest inspired me. Here goes:

Andrew Mayne is A-Mayne-zing!

Still with me? I sure hope so. Wynne and I were thrilled to sit down with Andrew but describing him is a challenge. The best kind…because Andrew is:

A former cruise ship magician and host of A&E’s wildly innovative magic show “Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne“.

A daredevil who a created an underwater stealth suit so he could swim with great white sharks.

A tech wizard who was one of the early prompt whisperers for Chat GPT.

A bestselling author of more than a dozen mystery-thrillers…and he writes two new books a year.

An educator who teaches critical thinking strategies to kids.

And if all of that isn’t enough of an introduction, please take a quick gander at the “About” page on his website where this tidbit sits among many other accomplishments:

As a creative consultant he’s worked behind the scenes for David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and David Blaine. He’s developed innovative magic effects that are performed around the world and even helped develop an experiment that was conducted onboard the International Space Station.

Wow!

During our conversation we talked about Andrew’s latest book, “Mr. Whisper”. It’s a thrill ride you won’t forget, delving into present day socio-cultural-scientific concerns as Andrew brings his expertise to the forefront on every page. Wynne and I both heartily recommend it!

But I want to leave you with one last observation. When we meet with an author who answers our questions and then some, it’s like receiving a gift. Insight so valuable we’ve found ourselves applying the wisdom instantly. You’ll understand when you tune in. Calling all creatives. You’re going to get a booster shot from Andrew.

  1. Everytime I see this description, I have to read it twice. “A daredevil who a created an underwater stealth suit so he could swim with great white sharks.” A stealth suit so he could swim with the sharks. Really!!! First, how does he know it’s stealth? Second, do we really need to swim with sharks? Really. Ha, ha. No, I love Andrew’s creativity and energy. Love people like that who get us breaking down the barriers in our life. What an exciting podcast. Good for Wynne and you!

    1. Thank you so much, Brian. We loved your ‘preview screening’ and fun post about Andrew’s episode this week. I’m with you — so many incredible aspects wrapped up in getting to know Andrew and his accomplishments…and on top of all of those things, he writes edge-of-your-seat thrillers. Wow, right? 🥰

    1. A terrific story, right? His experiences are inspiring for the reason you mentioned…one thing led to another and he had the insight and courage to follow…went with it. Thanks so much for tuning in, Beth. Appreciate you! 🥰

  3. Vicki, you had me at A-Mayne-zing! 😃 I really enjoyed this podcast with Andrew, and what a colorful background he has! Many points stood out…I can see how performing magic and lounging on cruise ships would be appealing. And swimming with great white sharks? Yikes! I love how ‘show don’t tell’ applies to magic as well as writing, which makes perfect sense. And Wynne, you asked a great question about teaching critical thinking to young children. Andrew’s answer makes the concept fun for them and fascinating to adults. Vicki, I love this: “Ego will protect itself.” Holding onto a sense of wonder is so important for all ages. And I love ” mystery matters.” I’ll check out Andrew’s book too! Thanks to all of you! ❤️🥰

  4. I 💕 this conversation – it could easily have been a two parter – and also shared it with my team as we’re all working on a new AI project at work. And as I said to Wynne on her related post, I put Andrew down as someone on our ideas list for a potential speaker for a large scale AI event we’re hosting in December.

It is so fascinating to me the path that he took to his current role with OpenAI. The juxtaposition of his work in magic is such a contrast to the mindset and critical thinking required in a science and AI role. But perhaps his eye of wonder and curiosity makes him so ideally suited to be a Science Communicator (what an awesome title). And an author on the side too!

AI is so fascinating and disruptive and it’s interesting to hear his and both your perspectives on this. It’s not going anywhere and I think those that embrace the change while also actively work to address the risks and harms posed with AI will reap its benefits and potential.

    1. Wow! Ab…love your insight and perspective. Yes, yes! Andrew had so much to share and we knew we were tapping only a small portion of all he has to offer. What a great speaker he would be…as you said…we need leaders and guides to help us embrace and benefit from AI rather than run away…which is kinda pointless, right?
Thank you so much…for being you! 🥰

  5. Children need to learn critical thinking. That Andrew teaches this lost skill to the youth is commendable. I thoroughly enjoyed his interview. He’s so full of constructive suggestions and is able to encourage and exemplify with a steady line of energized speech. Great interview! 🙂
