Episode 78: The Blessings & Responsibilities of Friendship with Dr. Gerald Stein

Wynne and I get excited when it’s time to visit with one of our favorite recurring guests, Dr. Gerald Stein.

In one of his recent posts, Becoming Close Friends:  A Practical Guide, Dr. Stein inspired us with philosophical thoughts about friendship. The types of friendships, the nature of forging bonds with others, along with reminders about the mercurial nature of maintaining connections, knowing when to apologize and make amends.

Throughout our chat with him, Dr. Stein provides rich and thoughtful examples, generously inviting us into experiences that have informed and enriched his own life.  Our conversation pivots from philosophers – Aristotle and Simone Weil – to Dr. Stein’s dear friends and family who bear witness, along with us, to the tragedies and triumphs in life.

You don’t want to miss this one. We know it will be time well spent. Please join us for the scenic and beautiful places we go when we share the power of story.

Vicki and Wynne 😊

  1. Aristotle’s three kinds of friendships certainly remains true in todays world. Thanks for sharing your views on friendship, Dr. Stein. I fondly remember the letter writing to one particular friend who moved away and was homesick. She often told me how much she appreciated my letters.

  2. What a lovely conversation full of warmth and insight.

Dr Stein’s friendship with Al sounds amazing and for him to share those words with Dr Stein speaks to the depth of the friendship. Agreed that men are just not brought up to express themselves in that way and hopefully this changes.

Very interesting to learn about Aristotle’s levels of friendship. And I agree that social media has really hindered so much of our ability to foster higher levels of friendship today. So much of it is surface level and at the lowest level of friendships.

    Great discussion!

    1. I hear you — and feel the same about those acquaintance/surface level friendships. I think it’s what I love most about blogging. I feel I really get to know folks and it’s that depth that matters to me. Signals real connection and friendship. Thanks for being one of those treasured friends, Ab! 🥰
