What IS it about September that prompts the need to nest? Last year, Wynne and I chatted about this topic in our podcast “September Savor”, discussing the rhythm of September: back to school, seasonal changes and more.
We’re still working this out in our heads and hearts. I mean…August 31 to September 1? What’ s the big deal? But it is. A big deal. An invitation to begin again? Some say September is resplendent with ‘new year, new you’ potential. More so, I think than January. What’s the allure? (And before you think it, let me say I’m giving zero nods to anything pumpkin-spicey.)
Whatever it is, we’re not alone. This time of year, advice abounds for parents who experience some of the biggest shifts. Did you see the bulletin from the Surgeon General in the U.S., Dr. Vivek Murthy on the topic of parental stress? So good!
My news feed’s been full of articles touting new ways to get a grip, get organized. Including endless meal-prep suggestions for busy days. (I personally love the advice from a registered dietitian to eat dinner earlier, if possible).
Rethinking routines. I like it. And Wynne? She’s a thinker girl and makes a terrific point about the power of pivots of all sorts. Into new adventures, tweaked routines. The September barn door is wide open, giving us ‘need to nest’ inspo.
Please join us for the scenic and beautiful places we go when we share the power of story.
Vicki and Wynne 😊
P.S. Do you tweak your routine this time of year? Tell us about it!

the need to nest seems to come about naturally, with the coming months, the new, the old, and a yearning for comfort and security. i’m already an early dinner person, and one of the things i’m excited about in retirement is not having to check so many things off this list. i think in general we have to be extra kind to ourselves when we feel the pressure to get everything done, and to not worry if it doesn’t all go as planned. part of this process is about trying to be ready, for all that needs done and will need doing, but one priority has to be taking care of ourselves throughout this

I really like your thought, Beth, about a “yearning for comfort and security”. Gosh, I feel that. And what a terrific point you make about focusing on kindness – toward ourselves whenever possible. Especially when life doesn’t unfold as expected. Thank you so much! 🥰

Wynne and you … always great stuff. I think the nesting comes from September being like a mini January. The start of new things!

I’m with you, Brian! I feel all of that so much more in September than I do in January. Thanks so much! 🥰

Yes, Vicki. The Surgeon General has much to say about a wide epidemic of anxiety, including parents, children, and others. He believes it is unpresidented. Thanks for mentioning it.

Love that you ladies are doing this podcast! I would say we are more structured in the Fall due to back to school for our granddaughters, the traffic flow is different through our little tourist town in New Hampshire, and people are preparing for winter, so getting their reading list updated, new indoor hobbies prepared, arrange any diet changes, etc. We love the slower pace as the weather cools down and this is only our first Fall in the northeast after 40 years of living in perpetually hot Florida!

Gosh, yes! You and Richard have made a BIG shift with your move. I love your observation about more structure in fall, Sheila…and those ‘winter prep’ activities. Important — preparing for life in the snowy northeast in the U.S. Sending hugs to you! 🥰

Thank you sooo much for your well wishes, Vicki! Prepping soon here. I have to bring my herbs in and I am trying to decide how I want to do that.

September nesting. Hmm… I wonder if it has to do with the changing seasons. I get the “nesting” urge in November when the leaves start falling and there’s a chill in the air. I want to cozy on up, and get things done. Phoenix is a bit of a laggard, through, so I wonder if it’s the seasonal shift that flips a switch in us? I’m so looking forward to listening!

I like your thought, Erin. Seasonal and less calendar-focused given all the incredible variability in weather around the country, around the world. Cheers to being cozy and getting things done! 🥰

My energy level waxes and wanes with the seasons and the amount of daylight hours, so winter is not a productive time for me! Routines keep me from hibernating. 🙂

We are packing up for the drive home. It will be a transition time for me, with an HOA annual meeting and my women’s group board meeting the first days I’m home. I’ll be inundated with new work to tackle. What I really would like is quiet time to recover from my vacation! I always viewed September as a new starting point, because the kids went back to school. They had two weeks off from swim team in August and were assigned new groups or coaches in Sept. The world starts up again.

I love how you put that – “the world starts up again”. Safe travels…thank you for taking us along on your vacation…and I hope you get a little time to catch your breath when you get home – before things get too busy, busy. xo! 🥰

The routine shifts automatically for most of us I think. Parents with school aged children, students of all ages, educators, those returning to work after summer vacation… And I feel the shift too, in the seasons, in the routines, in the energy that surrounds us. It’s such a special time of year. And yes, to all the cozy vibes. Does feel like nesting. Sign me up for pumpkin spice lattes. 😁

I enjoyed listening to this and I agree with the connection between fall and productivity. We’re not even a full week into September, and I’ve already completed a task that I had been procrastinating about all summer.
And very interesting observations on parents and stress. My two cents is that much of the stress is related to overscheduling. Kids seem to be in a multitude of activities and parents are run ragged. When my girls were growing up, they each one sport and one other activity. I believe we need to allow kids to be kids and have unstructured time.

Love your point about over scheduling, Michelle. Maybe UNDERscheduling should become a thing! 🥰

Spot on! Shifting into September is enormous. Yes, it’s nesting. Back to school, the beginning of the road to winter and loss of daylight trigger nesting. While autumn is glorious, it almost like a last hurrah.

Jennie! Last hurrah — I love that! It definitely feels that way, encouraging me to use my time well, rethink priorities. Hugs to you! 🥰

This was a lovely way to end my night after quite a stressful day. I was ready to go to bed but something told me to just stay up to listen to it. And I’m glad I did. The point around if we’re lucky, we have 80 summers. So just whatever it is that’s stressing us out in the moment, let it go. And so I will before bed. 🙂
Parents are definitely stressed and something about the back to school transitions are so hard. Summer laxness have to become rigid again for both the caregiver and child.
But autumn can also be cleansing and soothing for reasons you’ve stated.
PS. Thanks for the shoutout. My name is pronounced Abe as in Abe Lincoln. 😊
Have a good night and week, both!
