Who Are You Listening To?

With all the self-help books, motivational posts, and inspiring content online, how do you discern what’s right, what’s wrong, and what you should take in. Who are you listening to?

Several years ago, I think it was about 5 years or so, my husband came home with some potted hydrangeas from the grocery store. They must have been on a major sale, because my governor of practicality has rarely purchased potted plants. That’s my zone on our relationship Venn diagram.

Though to be honest, it was Easter and he did purchase one each for the women in his family. Keep it up and he’ll be demoted from Governor. Just a joke, his position is safe. I’m the sentimental one.

So I decided to keep one and plant it in my garden. “It will never bloom.” I was told several times, by several people.

These were people with plenty of gardening experience, so perhaps I should have listened. But I decided, being a curious mini rebel that I’d plant it and see what happens.

For the first couple of years the plant survived the winters outside in my front garden. Lush green leaves grew with their typical serrated edges contrasting beautifully with the black mulch surrounding them.

And then this summer, was that a couple of buds I saw in the midst of leaves? Granted it’s a tiny bush, perhaps only a foot tall, but here they were, hydrangea buds that eventually bloomed, on grocery store plants that everyone said never would flower.

Imagine if I had listened to all the naysayers. That plant would have ended up in the compost and there’d be just a little less beauty in the world.

It’s a simple example. Yet it illustrates how listening to our own voice is worthy, especially when all other voices are shouting to the contrary.

We now live in an age when the voice of truth and our own creativity is increasing difficult to discern amidst the noise. So we must connect with the source; the wordless voice that is our gift of creativity, ideas and thoughts. The one that quells the voices of the naysayers.

Here’s a video I made some time ago that will inspire you to listen to your own voice and the source of your creativity. I hope you enjoy.

Please note that I will be delayed replying to your comments, though I look forward to reading them and responding. Thank you for being here. It’s lovely to join you all here at HotM.

For more thoughts on creativity you may enjoy this post. Wishing you a Boring Day.

    1. The good thing is you’re there. Sometimes trusting our instincts isn’t so easy. We often cross question ourselves. But when we do learn to do it, so much more opens up to us. Thanks for your lovely, authentic message Beth.

    1. Thanks for your kind words Wynne. You’re right, it is so very important to listen to ourselves and hold our beliefs firm. As with everything it is a balance between being open minded and having boundaries.
Listening is also where we find inspiration.
Thank you giving me the opportunity to contribute here. Such a joy! 💕

    1. I love them too. They’re gorgeous. And thanks EA. Following our own voice opens us up to developing our intuition and eventually connects us to a divine source of creativity. We are all creative beings. And I do believe we must act on that.
Thanks for being here and for taking the time to leave your lovely message.

  5. Great message. Sometimes noise is just a collection of loud voices. Think of all the times throughout history, when the majority has been wrong.
