Do you know that debate between reading the book or watching the movie first? I think I almost always fall into the reading the book first camp because I love the fullness of that experience and that way I can savor the words.
But podcasting has given me another flavor of that question. For the people I’ve podcasted with, I’ve always read their work first but then I try to evaluate the conversation we have based on the ears of someone new to them.
In this episode of the Sharing the Heart of the Matter podcast, Vicki and I talk with Mitch Teemley – a storyteller (writer, filmmaker, composer, public speaker) with the audacity to believe others might actually want to read, watch or hear the things he comes up with.
And that audacity has led him in a life of great courage, conviction, and productivity. In addition to his very active blog, he’s written, directed, and produced two feature films, The Healing River and Notzilla. He also a sought after public speaker.
Do you need to have read or seen his work to enjoy this podcast? We know you will love it if you have – and believe you will love it even if you haven’t. Mitch’s wit and wisdom with a message comes through loud and clear.
What we learned – Mitch told the story of asking an improvisational musician how she came up with stuff on the fly. She responded that 90% of what she brings into a piece she has practiced before and just combines in new ways. Mitch said the same can be true of our writing creativity. This might be the secret behind his immense productivity and popularity.
Our favorite wisdom from Mitch – “Don’t edit.” Get the words on to the page and edit later.
How we felt after talking with Mitch – inspired, encouraged, and braver.

Oh my goodness. I had the benefit of joining you two, Mitch and Wynne, for the chat and I’m STILL feeling lifted and inspired by the insights Mitch offered. Most of all, the wisdom to ‘not edit’ when words are flowing. Let them flow. Grateful to both of you! 😉😊😉

“Don’t edit.” Get the words on to the page and edit later.” I have done this in all my creative writing sessions for years. Come to think of it – even during my grant writing days in medicine and education! Y’all keep the inspiration coming!
