In this episode of the podcast, I’m with my co-host, Dr. Vicki Atkinson, and we’re talking with author and illustrator, Dave Williams.
I love bookstores and have a soft spot for any book written in them. Novels like The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin are two of my favorites.
But I’ve never met anyone that was raised in a bookstore – until now. Dave Williams grew up working in his grandparents bookstore – a converted Victorian house in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Dave shares about that experience and how it instilled the magic of stories. And then how it carried forward to passing on that magic to his twin daughters.
Vicki and I ask him how he developed his talent. He tells us how he set his writing and creativity aside for a time. That is, until he saw what fun his daughters were having at craft time when they were young girls.
We talk about working our way from writing what we think we should write to writing what lights our own creative fire. And how being curious and interested in lots of things helps spark ideas.
Dave shares his tips and tricks like asking “what if” questions and being inspired by the playfulness of kids. This is such a fun episode with the incredibly delightful and prolific, Dave Williams. We know you’ll love it!

When I was young, I spent most of my time in two places, either playing on a ballfields or in a library/bookstore. That was heaven. Do you think he knows any bookstore owners that wouldn’t mind adopting me! Ha, ha, I can’t wait to listen. Great job Wynne!

I’m with you, Brian. Maybe a bookstore can adopt us as long-separated twins? 🙂

Love it Wynne. Ha ha!

Sounds like you had a good balance by spending time at ballfields and book places 🙂 And if you become friends with an owner of an independent bookstore, they just might adopt you!

Love this episode for so many reasons. First, you had me at the reference to Schitt’s Creek! Has there ever been a better TV show?
As this is my “Year of Reinvention”, I especially loved the reference to Dave’s grandfather and his “second life”. So brilliant.
And Dave’s comments about how he has come around to writing for himself are just brilliant. That’s exactly how I feel!
Thanks for another inspiring episode.

Todd’s love for music, jazz in particular, bubbled through the entire interview. It’s amazing that vinyl recordings are again leading the pack for albums and that musicians make so little for streaming. The seasonal recordings Todd and his musical family make for charity is a wonderful tradition. Thanks for sharing your passion, Todd! 🙂

Great episode and would have loved to grow up in a bookstore since that and libraries are my happy place! Actually, whenever I was in college the library was one of the places I would hang out in between classes! I don’t know if I would have been able to made any money working since I have to limit myself right now about how many books to order and it would be worse surrounded by them! I grew up loving books since my momma read to us and I would pretend all the time with my imaginary friends and reading books is like you are transported to the time of the books! I always wanted to share my love of books someway, never knew how since I am not creative, but I have decided to just use my blog to share the stories of my life!

Love this comment about books, imagination and growing up with stories. Karen, I might disagree that you are not creative! Congratulations for taking the plunge and blogging!

Thank you! I meant I am not that creative to write stories or draw anything!

Wonderful that your mom also read to you and passed along the love of reading. And I agree that books are powerful in being able to immerse us in the time and place of the books 🙂
