Podcast Friday! Episode 75: “Cast Aside” with Beth Kennedy

Sometimes a little perspective is all we need to see the gifts…right before our eyes. Either a reframing of an experience we’ve lamented over, or the goodness that arrives when we see people sparkle, despite adversity.

Our dear blogging friend, Beth, from “I didn’t have my glasses on” shares a sparkling story in our latest podcast. A reminder that when we’re feeling low, if we keep our eyes peeled, we might encounter a bright light, a person who can delight us with their presence and ability to see past their own mishaps and injuries to remain a ray of positivity to others.

Beth had just that sort of encounter – at Target, no less – and you’ll laugh along with us and remember the message. As we talk about comparing and contrasting mishaps (or in Beth’s words Tinkerbell vs. Paul Bunyan hand injuries) you’ll understand how Beth maintains her sense of optimism and delight in everyday magic. Yep. Even at Target.

And if that wasn’t enough? We giggle with Beth as she draws comparisons between hanging out with Wynne and I, podcast style, and the old school fun of watching guests on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.  Wynne will disagree, but I’ll be the Ed McMahon to her Johnny Carson any day. And just for fun, we’ll invite Beth to be a returning guest, adding the zest. Just like Doc Severinsen.

If none of that rings a bell, we promise we’re not mad about it. We’re just feeling lucky that we lived during the heyday of late-night talk shows. Beth would’ve been a great guest on Johnny’s sofa, but we’re glad we nabbed her for a podcast with us instead.

  6. “I’m just here for my annual checkup, but I think I just broke my finger in your parking lot.” It’s a safe bet the staff had never heard those words before. Isn’t it funny how we connect with strangers in ways we never would have expected? I tore a knee ligament once painting my house. I felt like Beth, sheepish about describing what happened to me. Couldn’t I have come up with some cooler way to get hurt like messing it up while racing down a ski slope?

    Beth’s story about rushing made me recall the time my dad crossed the United States/Canadian border in their motor home to try and buy cheaper gas, and proceeded to put a giant hole in the roof when he got mixed up and got in the wrong lane at the border crossing. He was trying to save a couple of dollars and ended up with a huge bill to repair the motor home.

    Beth has an aura of positive energy and a unique ability to notice things that most of us fail to see. I wish her the best in retirement filled with plenty of adventures and misadventures.

  7. Hmm, there’s an idea. A new late show with Wynne and Vicki. You guys will have to fight it out for the Johnny and Ed McMahon roles. Beth can be Joey Bishop and Joan Rivers. According to Google … they appeared the most on the show. It would be better than most of the late shows on Tv. I can’t wait for the season kickoff. 😎😎😎😎

  10. Wow what a great story Beth. Nothing like Paul Bunyan putting things in perspective. Also know that sometimes it’s okay to feel sorry for yourself, but yes, these people come into our lives at exactly the moment we need them too. It feels like magic. Loved this! Thanks for sharing Johnny Carson and crew. 😆

  12. This was a delightful podcast. I remembered the finger in the door story, but must have missed the follow-up with the man in the store. I enjoyed hearing that very much. My mom used to often tell me growing up: No matter how bad you think you have it, there’s always someone who has it worse. This was a great illustration of that. And a good reminder for us all.

    Wonderful to see Beth and hear her voice! Long time fan! 🙂

  13. Lovely conversation that’s right on target, pun intended! These coincidental life encounters that help illuminate our challenges are blessings and sounds like Beth one of those with Paul Bunyan hands.

    I agree there’s something about those late night talk show conversations that’s lost in today’s fast paced world. I enjoy watching the old Tonight Show clips when Joan River subs for Carson and it’s definitely a different time!
