Our second short follows the theme of asking. I share the tender moments that come when we ask our loved ones to tell us their stories. It helps to deepen our understanding as well as our relationships. As playwright Jack Canfora says, “I’m an open book, but I don’t know how to find the best pages.” So all we have to do is ask.

  5. Your “end of life” contact with your Dad is touching, Wynne. Since we tend to look away from mortality rather than looking at it straight ahead, we miss much that is essential and moving in human contact.

    We fool ourselves by thinking there will always be more time.

    I have made it a practice to tell people why they matter to me over the phone and over a meal, but always one-on-one.

    The Grim Reaper speaks to us of what is important if we only listen and open the conversation.

    1. Wow – what an incredibly wise practice. I love how you address it in such an intentional and loving way. For sure I thought I’d have much more time with my dad and learned the hard way how untrue that assumption is. Thanks for the wonderful wisdom!

  13. Two great shorts, Wynne, and your connection with your dad touched my heart. Asking questions, digging deep is what my family tried to do with my parents and in-laws before they all passed. We tried to encourage our children to ask their grandparents anything, and they did at times; they even recorded conversations a few times. But sadly, questions continue to surface and now it’s too late. Thanks for sharing the wisdom. 💞
