Episode 135: “This Sea Within” with Deborah Brasket

Vicki and I love being able to talk with returning guests because it leads to deeper conversations – about the work, why we do it, and the goodness that comes from sharing. This is definitely the case with one of our favorite novelists, the amazing Deborah Brasket.

In this episode of Sharing the Heart of the Matter, my co-host, Vicki Atkinson, and I talk with novelist Deborah about her new book, This Sea Within, a sweeping historical novel that blends political intrigue, love, coming-of-age, and spiritual longing. Deborah shares how her world travels, deep research, and personal reflections shaped a story rich with danger, beauty, and purpose.

Together, we explore the connection between the sensual and the spiritual, the power of story to illuminate history, and what it means to be called by something greater than yourself. If you love thoughtful conversations about books, creativity, courage, and the deeper currents that move our lives, this episode is for you.

  3. Deborah’s story sounds fascinating. I can’t wait to read it. Thanks to you guys pointing out so many great books though my list of books is starting to pile over. If you don’t hear from me in a while, be sure to call 9-1-1. It means the books have fallen over my night stand and I can’t get up!!! Ha, ha.

    1. Haha! You’ve fallen and you can’t get up? Books to blame…ah, yes!

  4. I saved this interview for today, when I could sit and listen to the entire thing. After Deborah finishes her trilogy, I hope she considers writing a memoir about her six years at sea. That would be fascinating.

    1. Thanks, Peter! I do have a memoir in mind about our trip. But also I’ve written the first book in what I imagined to be a series for middle-graders about a family that goes sailing around the world written from children’s perspective. I’d like to get back to that someday too.

      1. That is the age I’m primarily writing for too, though I just completed a book of humor. It sounds liike you’ve got a lot of irons in the fire, Deborah.

  5. Congrats to Deborah on her latest novel – and within less than a year of the previous one too! I enjoyed hearing more about her creative process and the character Lena, and working with the artist to bring the lovely cover to life. Good luck with the next novel!
