For the past couple of years, my daughter, Miss O, has slept in my bed most nights. At some point, I just gave up the pretense of having her go to bed in her own bed because she worried the “thieves” would get her when she would shift from her bed to mine in the … More Beds, Boundaries, and Beyond
While still focusing on aging and the lighter side of that process, I really wanted to pay homage if you will to everyone who identifies as female across our earth. Wednesday, March 8th was the official celebration date this year for International Women’s Day. Statistically, according to the US CDC (Centers for Disease Control) men … More Women’s Voices
We are starting month 3 here at The Heart of The Matter! Because spring is around the corner (somewhere) we are choosing to lighten up a bit to embrace the longer, sunnier days. That means our attitudes, outlook and posts this month are undergoing a slight change. We are all about the humor, especially when … More Let’s Dance!
When I went to schedule a podcast recording with author, Cheryl Oreglia, she said I could pick the time and quipped about her husband of 40 years, “Because I just have Larry [to keep entertained] and he can be left alone for short amounts of time.” It’s indicative of the great humor she uses in … More Episode 7: Grow Damn It!
The word “addiction” is so alarming to me and brings up all kinds of associations. I think of my mother with her vodka, her DUI’s, her rehab stints, and her overall sad and lonely train wreck of a life. I think of movies that portray addiction and recovery incredibly well, such as 28 Days and Thanks for Sharing. I think of being taken to AA meetings by my parents, my twin sister and I playing under the table while people talk about their feelings in a room full of cigarette smoke. I think of 12-step recovery books arranged welcomingly on the top of toilet tanks (that’s kind of a thing people in recovery do). I grew up in a recovery family and have seen many forms of alcohol addiction. I’ve seen loved ones recover and loved ones pass away from the disease. It’s a loaded word, and for most of my life, I swore I would never be associated with it … More The Subtleties of Love Addiction

Tax season is a time to reevaluate things in my life and make changes that I find may be necessary for a better future. My financial planner is a whiz at helping me do that check-up on what’s ahead in retirement, especially if like many women in my family I live to be close to … More What We Present To The World
We arrived at an AirBnB at about 4pm this past Friday afternoon to spend the long weekend in one of our favorite spots, Mutiny Bay on Whidbey Island. Within 90 minutes of getting here, my three-year-old Mr. D was stuck in the bathroom. Out of curiosity, he’d fiddled with the lock on the door and … More Unlocking the Door of Curiosity
The other day Vicki and I were talking about this blog, the Heart of the Matter. Sparked by an idea from my brilliant brother’s marketing blog, Vicki asked something like, “So, are we on brand?” Hmm, on brand for being a blog where we have conversations about things that matter. On brand for telling stories … More Marketing, Mountaineering, and Making Meaning
