What Makes You Laugh?

Finding our funny sides…oh, nothing’s more important but it might be the first task that’s sidelined for “higher priority” stuff. Amiright?  No need to answer.  I think I can hear you nodding yes. 😉

Humor is magical but also blessedly individual.  What tickles one person’s funny bone may not conjure so much as a chortle from someone else.  But…when you find your people…the folks who belly laugh with you, with zero inhibition?  Ah. That right there?  That’s the good life.  In my case, many of the best guffaws and giggles come at my own expense.  I’ve learned to be a-okay with it…lead the parade to goofytown.  Yep!

But what about you?  What gets you going?  At Heart of the Matter, we’re focusing on funny this month, sprinkling in a little sunshine in a post…or two…or more.  In a few weeks we’ll be celebrating our three-month anniversary and we’ve decided to live it up, laugh at ourselves and/or share the things that bring us joy.

When Wynne and I put together this month’s ‘quote collage’ (see below and visit us here for a downloadable copy) we left a boatload of quips on the cutting room floor.  But what we included?  Some of our faves…not least of which is this pearl, which speaks to both of us…or I should say, speaks to our sweet tooths.  We’ve both got ’em and they are maddeningly in charge unless we tame them, daily.  Here’s the giggle:

“One of life’s mysteries is how a two-pound box of candy can make us gain five pounds.”

Answers, anyone?  We’ll wait.  Don’t mind us while we nibble on a little fudge to pass the time.

Vicki 💖

    1. You’re so right, Brenda. Here’s one that didn’t quite fit on the chart: “Remember when people had diaries and got mad when someone read them? Now, they put everything online and get mad when people don’t.” – unknown

      🙂 🙂 🙂

      1. Brilliant 🤣🤣🤣
I marked an assessment recently where it was suggested that we didn’t have telephones before the millennium… teenagers are fun

      2. Oh, golly, yes…also about phones with cords…I had a student ask once if the keypads on wall phones were also useful like smartphones are now…could we text with them? Umm….nope. 🤣

  1. Bring on the funnies! The Chinese proverb is a fav, but love all the quotes and the focus on laughter overall – along with the downloadable quotes. After all, laughter is the best medicine. Thank you, Vicki! 😃❤️

    1. Ah….secret sauce there, Elizabeth? I agree. If the hubs and I aren’t laughing – at each other or whatever each day brings – there’s something missing. And…I can detour into cranky, TBH, if I don’t get a little levity into every day. Thanks so much for giggling about the cats…you and Olive (is that right?) might know things that I don’t….xo! Cats are so mysterious…😊😘😊

      1. It is the secret sauce. How boring would it be married to someone without a sense of humor! You’re right, it’s Olive. She’s my daughter’s cat who became mine when my daughter abandoned me for college and adulthood. I’m so glad I have Olive.

      2. Why am I not surprised? That feline has spunk…or something! If only she could speak….I’m wondering what she’d say…similar to Wynne’s fun signs that sweet Biscuit wore. I bet Olive has stories to tell….🤣🤣🤣

  2. Looking forward to a good laugh! Love to see too how different folks write about humor. It’s such a broad line. And a tough one too. My humor like you Vicki tends to be at my own expense. I found it easier to laugh at myself than laugh at someone else . . . really out of self preservation. When I was a kid, I figured if I laughed first, then it took some of the sting away. I think I probably still think that way. Plus, I always worried about someone not taking my humor right and getting offended. Just easier to laugh at the things I thought were funny. Ha, ha.

    1. OMG…you bring up such an important point, Brian, about humor and how it can cut two ways…funny/offensive…they run so close and I think the truth you just offered — that sticking with our own silly stories is safe ground? You are right — I veer toward that, too. It’s a little bit of a self-protect mechanism, I get that, but I also like to think I provide plenty of comic relief for others. 🤣 My dad often said, “Girl, I don’t know how you get through the day sometimes”…typically when I demonstrated a fundamental lack of common sense. Oy! 🙄

  3. Love this post and all the fun and funny comments. Let’s laugh it up!!

One of the things I’m still trying to figure out about that mystery — is why I keep testing the premise about the 2 lb box of chocolate and the 5 lbs? It must be good science to repeat the experiment, right? 😉

    1. Absolutely — “QC” work – quality control and hey, Wynne, you’re the engineer — aren’t we just conducting reliability experiments?! LOL! Or…if we want to veer off into social science, we’re just validating and replicating our results, right????? (Please say yes!) 😁😁😁

  4. As I’ve decided to sort of focus on the aging component this month the very true age=wisdom saying seems appropriate right now Vicki! I have no idea how funny anything I write will be but it will be based on experience and whatever wisdom I’ve managed to cram into my remaining brain cells 😉

    1. I’m with you, Deb. Those true-life stories and snippets can be inspirational, funny…or just our truth! Can’t wait to see what wisdom you share…everything you write is good, good, good stuff. 🥰

  5. A much needed smile and laugh for a Friday afternoon. Thanks for the quotes, Victoria. My wife and I always try to laugh each day and is probably the secret to a successful relationship. March seems like it is going to be fun already. I am going to be working out how to baptize a cat 😂. Have a good weekend.

    1. Ah! I’m happy to hear that, Davy! Thank you so much for reading…and if you figure out the cat baptism business, do tell! All the best to your wife, too — I think you two know about marriage magic…I agree…it’s laughter! 🤣😉🤣

    1. Oh hey, Michelle — that tracks for me! If you don’t eat the chocolate…yes, yes! Sounds like a great way to lose five pounds — thanks for pointing that out! LOL, indeed! 😘😎😘
