Podcast Episode 8: I Write…Because I Wonder

I love this quote from Lucille Clifton.  Some days I’m not sure I “know” anything but boy, do I wonder/wander in a never-ending stream of fascination and bemusement, Vicki-style.  Okay, sometimes my wonder/wander brings frustration and impatience – but you’ll be happy to know I’m usually the target.

Writing helps me think and more than once, writing has gotten me out of a jam or two.  See, I fall into the bucket of overthinkers.  We, the overly-absorbed who swirl and retread in our own infinity loops of what-ifs and quandaries.  What would I do if I was unable to ‘write it out’ and get my messiness into view, into the light of day?  That’s a rhetorical question…I know…I’ve always known.  Left defenseless, unable to mull and express the murky?  The misgivings multiply like mad until they take over and I find myself with a head ache, a belly ache, a back ache or all of the above.  My antidote?  Write!

My favorite thing about Heart of the Matter?  The company I keep with like-minded (although for their sakes, I hope less-tormented) wordsmiths.  Folks who enjoy telling stories…swapping giggles and epiphanies…all with an eye toward inspiration and greater good.  Yep – I’ve found my peeps and two of them – Wynne Leon and Brian Hannon – graced me recently with podcast time to shoot the breeze about the compulsion to create, to tell stories.

Join us, won’t you?  It’s our first-ever three-amigos podcast…we didn’t go off the rails entirely, but we got close. 😉

I can’t wait for you to listen.  Join us on your favorite platform or follow this link: Episode 8: Expressive Writing to listen on Anchor. You can also find our podcast on Apple, Amazon, Spotify and Pocket Casts by searching for Sharing the Heart of the Matter and we drop new episodes every Friday morning.

Please subscribe! Next week’s podcast is Mitch Teemley talking about having the audacity to believe that others want to read, watch or listen to his stories. It’s really good!

Then I hope you’ll come back here and share the take-away gems that you glean!

  1. Oh, Vicki, thank you for this one… how this resonated for me! Especially how you “wonder/wander in a never-ending stream of fascination and bemusement”. I love when a writer finds the words for the exact way I have been feeling. I was up early this morning, ruminating, as I am wont to do. This was JUST what I needed to hear, to remind me that I am just fine… normal, even… And… I FINALLY bit the bullet and joined Spotify!!! I have been putting that off for awhile now, so thank you for THAT as well 🙂 It was very cool, listening to your podcast and hearing you, Wynne and Brian after having read so many of (all of) your blog posts. I loved when Brian spoke of writing as “lessons I need to pick up; I’m writing for myself”. I know that’s the primary reason why I write. And wow… when Wynne said, “You have to be present to win”!!! I am always in a good place when I am getting my thoughts out on ‘paper’, and I always ruminate too much when I am NOT writing (“everyone is carrying something” indeed… 😳). On that note, I think I need to go and relook at a few pieces in my own “cue”, as you so perfectly put it. Have a great day!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙏

    1. Patti! You’ve filled me up for the day…the week…the month! I know Wynne and Brian will also be thrilled that you listened and enjoyed…that our chat made sense to you. I suspect there are a few of us who wake up ruminating, like you. So good to know we’re in good company! 😉 Oh — and I can’t wait to see what rolls out of the Patti ‘cue’. Somehow, I know you’ve got gems on the way. Hugs and smiles to you! 🥰

    2. What a really great comment, Patti! It is so gratifying to know that we are all in the same boat — and together we’re getting somewhere. I love the little tidbits that you mention because it’s so meaningful to hear how it landed for you. And the beauty of co-creating this little nook is extended. Thank you for that gift!

  2. I just listened to this episode, Vicki, and enjoyed it immensely. It was also good to put voices to the writing. Two things that resonated from the podcast were, firstly, how everyday things can be sources of inspiration for our writing. Secondly, the point, Wynne, made about being present in what we do and write and how this can bring detail to our words. I picked up some great tips and reminders from all three of you, so thank you.

    1. What a gift, Davy! Thank you for taking the time to listen and to share such endearing feedback. I agree — I’ve loved the ability to LISTEN to writing friends. The podcasts add a depth, an extra layer of connection for me when I can hear the voices…especially when discussing our passions – the art of writing. I’m so pleased you found value in the podcast. Cheers, hugs and smiles to you! 😊😊😊

  3. Your piece, Wynne’s mention of the podcast, and the podcast itself, made my day. I love the chance to express myself and figure out what I really think, but, like you, the thing I love the most about HoTM is hanging out with great writers and thinkers like Wynne and you. I find that I learn something about life and about myself every time we talk, listen to a podcast or read one of your posts. Plus, I get jazzed even more about writing. Can never get enough of that inspiration. Thanks Friend!

    1. Thank you, Brian! We’re having fun…swapping insights and ideas…and I can’t think of anything more helpful to me, as a writer. Our HoTM team is the best…and we’re glad you’re part of the crew! 😎😎😎

  4. I’ve just listened to the podcast … it is the first one. I dont know why but I expected video, but it was lovely to put voices to the names, and the writing. It seems appropriate to hear the voices we read. It was lovely to hear your experiences of writing, but it was also interesting to hear the interaction between the three of you … you’re all wonderful writers, and it’s encouraging to hear of your experiences and views on writing.

  5. Like many others who commented on this post/podcast, I got a lot out of it re my writing and blogging and what I want or need to express in it. It also gave me some food for thought about the format to use, especially if I want to grow my readership.
