Do you know Deirdre?
You might. The delightful, insightful and knowledgeable Deirdre Wilcox is Wynne’s wonderful yoga and meditation teacher and a recurring podcast guest here at Sharing the Heart of the Matter. Deirdre is well-regarded wellness educator and we were lucky enough to spend time with her recently.
Let me be bold and blunt. 😊 Maybe it’s the former professor in me, but I believe this episode should be required listening…and viewing (see YouTube clip below). Why? Oh my. So many good reasons.
Deirdre’s perspective about navigating, as she puts it, “the fall reset” will give you just the boost you need to move smoothly into the change of seasons.
Deirdre reminds us that summer is full of spontaneity – joyfully so – thanks to the extra daylight giving us the ability to pack our days with activities. But come September-ish, as we noted last week in “The Need to Nest”, we get pulled in other directions. A return to school for many and more structured routines for many households.
When the first hint of autumn appears, rather than leaping headlong into your pumpkin spice latte and stressors about the upcoming holidays, how about taking a pause? Or as Deirdre puts it, consider the ‘grief and relief’ of slowing down to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. With intention.
I love that Deirdre reminds us to consider our ancient rhythms, derived from our agrarian roots. As the growing season wraps up, our attentions turned inward. Where a bubbling pot of soup and the flicker of candlelight signify a slowing down. Leaning into rituals and routines…while considering new wellness strategies. Boosting our immune systems, treating our bodies with care.
Deirdre will inspire you with oodles of ideas. Easily adopted and sustainable. I love her perspective of the biology of it all. Listening to our bodies and following the rhythm of nature.

Deirdre has a wonderful energy – ‘every season has a gift’ so true, I love the passage into autumn, my favorite season, and Deirdre has described it so well. the ‘no plan plan’ is something I love, I used to give my daughters the opportunity to have one ‘no reason reason’ for a day off of school each semester. no plan or explanation needed. easing into the colors and rhythms of autumn from the bright busy-ness of summer is refreshing and restorative. I always look forward to this.

I love this conversation, so calming and soothing, like a warm bright autumn day.
I think your chat captures what I love most about the transition into the fall, the permission to slow things down, to bring out the herbal teas and the pumpkin spice and to reflect and give thanks to the season that came before us and to enjoy the harvest of the summer. 💕
It also reminded me why I love summer so much – the long days, the lack of structure and staying up later at night – and why there is also a mourning period as we enter the fall days.

Ohhh. I love that – “permission to slow down”. So good and I agree…it is like a mourning period, saying goodbye to those less structured days. Thank you, Ab. Deirdre was a delight, for sure! 🥰

Enjoying the slowness of autumn is one of my favourite things. I’m looking forward to cozy days. Though neither I nor my garden is pushing summer away. It’s been blissfully summery here the last couple of weeks. No chill in the air yet.
I really must watch/listen to this episode and Deidre’s wisdom.
