Two Again Tuesday

We’ve been having fun making YouTube clips from our fabulous podcast guests. So, we’re republishing some of our best clips.

Last weekend when my kids and I went away for three nights, I realized in the middle of the 3rd night that I hadn’t refilled the water reservoir for Rusty the gecko before I’d left home. As I worried about what to do with a dead gecko and how to tell my kids, I remembered these great episodes we’d recorded.

The first was the story of when my kids and I tried to rescue a rabbit the cat had been “toying” with.

With the fantastic follow-up from Pete Springer telling us about the touching and teachable moments that came from having pet rats in his 2nd grade classroom.

  1. Our family rescued a Netherland dwarf rabbit deserted in a classroom by a fired teacher. It lived for 13 years. https://5secondsmiles.com/2023/04/07/the-bunny-in-the-basement/
We learned that little bunnies were quite fragile and if it were frightened, it could die. I empathize with your sad bunny experience, Wynne, but I liked hearing how you handled it. I thoroughly enjoyed Pete’s stories, especially the one about poor dead Snowball. You’re both great story tellers! 🙂

  2. It was fun to listen to your story again, Wynne, about your rabbit rescue. Listening to this again along with my own ramblings reminds me that we don’t always get it right as parents and teachers. All we can do is use our best judgment. Hopefully, most of the time we make sound decisions, but it’s impossible to be perfect. When we mess up, and all adults do from time to time, we should follow the advice we give to children and learn from our mistakes so that in the future we can make better choices.

  3. “Mom, he’s still dead”.. Oh so cute. Loved the story and the lovely lessons that went with it. Real life, real lessons and no better way to learn.

With all of the rats we had, I never knew they only lasted 2 years. I guess cuz they got away or died.

Oh now, we had a snowball little mouse, Pete. A whole story in itself! Too funny Pete, to have this happen on evaluation day.

Oreo and Snowball were icons in there day during your evaluation, no less. Too funny!

    Fun stories you 3!!!

    Love it!
“I should have kept the white lie going”. Well duh.. Pete. LOL! Aww, I can imagine how bad you felt! Love the cards to the rats and one to you from them!

Such wonderful lessons in love, life, death and embracing and teaching at it’s best. ‘

Hail to the bunnies and the rats.

    Great story pick me up!

    Great Podcast!

    1. Thank you, Cindy. I want to reiterate how much I enjoyed your podcast too. You were as genuine as I knew you’d be. I suspect that many of us gravitate toward the same kind of people, those who are honest, authentic, and can laugh at themselves. Not surprised we ended up enjoying our time with Wynne and Vicki, who exemplify those traits.

We’ve been without power for over two days, and it just came back on. Let there be light! First, let me take a much needed shower. 🤣

  4. Probably because I know too well with Copper in our family, “stepping in dog poop” made me laugh, Wynne! Joking aside, I enjoyed both of these podcasts! Great stories and lessons to learn. Wynne, I could hear Elton John singing “Circle of life” when you talked about your cat ‘toying’ with the bunny. Your vivid description of what the bunny looked like when you found it was effective. Ahh!! And as to rats, Santa brought Buddy, the rat, for our kids one Christmas. I got over the creepy tail because of his cuteness. He lived about two years, like Pete said, and then he moved on to his next life. No more rats after that, but Buddy provided a lot of joy during his brief life. I love what Pete said about acceptance, and also that pets are a good way for kids to learn responsibility. When the three of you were laughing during Pete’s podcast, I started laughing! It was contagious in a good way! Anyway, two great podcasts! ❤️🤗
